That call

None of them believed me, for the thing I told them was of a very strange nature. Most of the people would have never heard such a thing and imagining it was beyond the capability of many. After I was done speaking, I realized my throat was dry and the strange silence had enveloped us all. Suddenly the telephone rang and broke the silence and the occupants of the room looked at each other with puzzled looks wondering who would be calling at this odd hour.

Mr. Anderson finally got up from his comfortable leather chair and picked up the phone, relieving us of the terrible sound. He said ‘Hello’, and then exclaimed how could this be possible? I soon realized that he wasn’t talking to the caller but to all of us in the room.

Things were beyond the level of my belief, the confusion was now overwhelming and the face of Mr. Anderson told another story which we all were guessing now. I could now see the tension and the fear building up amongst the occupants and realized that I wasn’t only one afraid in the room. This thought was both comforting and scary in a way.

Duty Calls- Short story Part 1

This morning he was sitting in his jeep outside the government hospital. He had parked under a tree beside the gate, a few steps away from the bus stop where in every 5 minutes a bus came and a hoard deboarded the bus. A few went into the hospital while others rushed towards the metro station, he saw all those people but did not focus on anyone particular. He was just seeing a group of people moving from one place to another, in the distance, an auto waited for the customers in front of the gate. He thought how he is to stand right there, wondering what would happen if an ambulance was to come, or someone who had a heart attack was rushed in through the gate. He sure was unaware that he could be the reason of someone’s death and the worst part was he might not realize that and would do the same thing again.

He knew that he was losing his focus and was instead looking at people, complete strangers, auto-wallahs who came and stopped and looked for customers followed by a bus. He looked in the rearview mirror of his jeep and saw his sweaty and a tired face, then he looked at his uniform which he didn’t get time to change for three days because this investigation was sure a different and a difficult one. He looked around, checked his dying phone and decided to step out of the car and stretch and have a cup of tea. He thought he deserved a cup now, at least.

He locked the jeep and walked and told the auto-wallah to move and not obstruct the gate. He ordered tea and a cigarette, asked for a Gold Flake and lit it, a few puffs and he realized that this was stupid of him, to smoke near the hospital. Before throwing it, he took one long puff and held the smoke in while his lungs burned. He threw and squashed the cigarette under his brown shiny shoes, he wondered how come his shoes were still so clean. He had taken a few sips when he got a call on his phone, he took the call and got to know that the suspect has left the hospital and entered the metro station. He was also asked if he saw him, he took a gulp and said ‘I think I did’, he had to lie.

He threw a fifty rupee note at the chai-wallah and ran towards the metro station. At entering the stations, he saw a long queue and started wondering that the suspect could be anywhere, he could have already boarded a train. He felt useless and irritated but tried to take control of the situation by taking deep breaths. He had heard somewhere that it helped in situations like these.

He came back to the jeep and took three long breaths before finally calling his senior on the phone and telling him that he lost him in the crowd. He turned the key and the engine came to life but he stepped out of the car and went to chai-wallah and asked him for the change before finally leaving to the police station.

Note: I might write a second part of this with a different perspective very soon. Let me know your views about this. Thanks!

Man behind the door

I had been sitting on the sofa for some hours now with my laptop in front of me with no charge left. I had been without electricity for hours now and had been sitting in complete darkness. I heard someone climb the stairs and they sound seemed to stop right in front of my door, I expected a knock but it did not come and everything went silent, same as a few minutes ago. The only difference was that this time the silence wasn’t comforting and I had my doubts.

I got up from the sofa and went to the door silently, like a burglar in my own house and very careful with sound. I put my ear on the door and tried to listen and heard some sounds, someone was whispering on the phone or might be talking to himself but then someone else spoke too. By the time I was sure they had some motive and I tried to listen more carefully and pressed my ear against the door. They talked for some time with faint voices and I couldn’t make any sense of it. Then they stopped talking and everything went silent once again and  one of them knocked on the door and I jumped back.

I had to draw a long breath before going towards the door again and heard another knock and I slowly undid the lock and opened the door. There stood two men, their faces not visible in the dark, then one of them stepped ahead and said – “Hey, we are your neighbors. Do you have an extra candle?”

That’s all folks. 🙂

P.S. Copied it from my diary, wrote it earlier in the evening.

The man

There was a man
Standing outside a shop
Under the streetlight
He had a cigarette in his hand
Which he puffed every other second

The smoke mixed well
With the fog
And the cold night
Gave it a more mysterious feeling

He didn’t hurry with his cigarette
It seems he enjoyed it
After a while
The door of the shop opened
A man came out
And called him inside

Everything fell silent
Then two shots were heard
Followed by silence again
The door opened
But no one came out.

His Guilt – Short Story

He sat near his window staring into the dark night and thought about what he had done. Something had gotten into him and it all happened very fast. Now the night and the darkness did not scare him like they used to, the monsters that chased him weren’t there anymore but he was afraid, he was still afraid. He felt like running and something invisible thing chased him, his guilt chased him.

He lifted his hand up and saw that the blood was now drying and it was much darker in colour. He had done it and there was no going back, he looked at the dead face and it’s eyes were still open, dead yet shining. He looked into them, there was something deep about them, it held him like they were trying to say something. He turned his face towards the window and stared back into the darkness and thought about what he had done.

Moonless Night – Part 2 Complete story.

Hello,I wrote a short story last night and many of you here liked it and wanted to know how it ended.I haven’t written an ending yet but I had a comment where a blogger name Janice Collins, a fan of horror ,mystery, thriller like myself tried to complete it. Her response was amazing and I think that completes the story. She managed to make it more interesting and gave it a few more twists and turns it really deserved. I am writing the text version below the screenshot of the reply she made. First Part of the story. –

A plain road ahead and a moonless night. You couldn’t go back to your house because someone there is waiting with a knife. You had no telephones because you wanted a peaceful life.Little did you know that far from this city lived a maniac who always had a knife.A plain road ahead and a moonless night. You decide to move ahead into the dark with nothing but your baseball bat.You walked and walked with a hope for sunrise in your heart.Hours had passed but night only got dark. You stopped and looked back at your lonely house but there was nothing to be seen in the dark.Somebody moved in the dark and a dog howled somewhere far.You froze there in the dark. You checked your pockets and touched yourself only to realize you didn’t had anything at all.You were now sure that there was someone in those bushes and he was hiding in plain sight, could it be the same man with the knife?

blog replyStory continued. ….

By Janice- He tries to approach the shadow thing in the bush he finds out it’s a corpse of a young man gutted with a sharp knife and his heart almost jumps out of his chest. He tries to run away as far as possible and he reaches a warehouse where he hides. He’s exhausted from fear and running, he passes out. When he wakes up he’s not him but he’s the man with the knife and the baseball bat was the knife and the killing spree goes on.

Book – And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie

Yesterday I completed this book by Agatha Christie called “And then there were none“.

I’m not going to review it but I’ll write down my personal thoughts about this novel.I liked the story,it was amazing and hard to put down without knowing and anticipating what would happen next but I was a little disappointed in the ending of the story.I expected much more. It is however an amazing book, people who like fiction, mystery, thriller, suspense would love it undoubtedly.I gave 4 stars to it on my Goodreads.

Night

When the night comes
And the moon hides
Behind the clouds
And the darkness
Creeps over everything
The dogs howl
And that’s
The only sound
That is when the
Creatures of the night
Come out
To haunt and roam
The empty streets
To haunt you
And make your
Heart beat fast
To drain the blood
Out of you

The Second Chance -Short Story

image

Straight from the diary(may have mistakes and errors, ignore them)He was gasping for breath as he opened his eyes.He couldn’t recall what had happened and how did he end up under this big leafless tree. There was nothing that would help him identify the place or tell him what time it was.It was just plain dark and there was no sound, not a whisper. He lay down on the grass again, feeling better for now he was breathing normally, but his head was throbbing and there was confusion in his mind.He tried recalling what had happened but harder he tried, the more  blank responses he got.
He got up and realized his body was sore, like he had been working out for a long time but he didn’t remember doing anything, everything was blank. His eyes were watering but he could see better now.Suddenly he heard a faint sound of footsteps, but it soon was clear that someone was coming. He frantically looked around in all the four directions but there wasn’t anyone.Meanwhile the sound of the footsteps was becoming more and more clear and it was evident that whoever was coming would soon reach him.
He could feel his heart beating faster and once again he was gasping for breath,he was having a panic attack. The footsteps now were near but there wasn’t anyone near him and all of a sudden the sound stopped and everything fell silent all over again. The only sound he could hear was the sound of his heart beating rapidly and the sound he made while drawing large breath.

I wrote only this much. How was it?
